Steeped in the latest neuroscience, Polyvagal Theory, somatic psychology, nature based therapy, and ancient wisdom practices, this course is an invitation to renegotiate your trauma, stress, and burnout, and reconnect with your essential self.   This course provides a compassionate space for you to cultivate deeper self-awareness, attune to your body’s wisdom, and navigate burnout with more ease and presence. By the end of this course you’ll gain tools to regulate your nervous system, create safety within, and embrace life’s challenges as opportunities for growth. This journey is about coming home to yourself—because when you are deeply connected to your body and inner world, you are better able to come out of survival states and into embodied presence aligned with your true nature and essential self.

Meet Your Instructor

Jessica Conway, RN, MSN, RYTT, is a multifaceted healer with over 14 years of critical care nursing experience and presently working as a hospice nurse. A passionate seeker of truth and wisdom in the human experience, Jessica's own journey from burnout and nervous system dysregulation led her to become a Somatic Practitioner and Educator, Safe and Sound Protocol Provider, Yoga Instructor, and Meditation Guide. With a heart that feels life intensely, she created the transformative course "Rising in Resilience - Freedom from Burnout for Nurses and Helping Professionals" to empower Nurses and other Helping Professionals to prevent and heal burnout and nurture resilience. As a trauma-informed Somatic Practitioner, her mission is to guide individuals on a journey of embodied self-discovery, where the body becomes a doorway to healing, resilience, and profound connection.  This course is rooted in the belief that the body holds the key to transformation, offering a path to wholeness, self-attunement, and embodied presence.

Module 1 - Overview of Applied Polyvagal Theory and Its Application to Burnout Prevention and Resilience.

In this module, you’ll gain a foundational understanding of Polyvagal Theory and how it applies to burnout prevention and resilience. By learning to understand your body’s signals, you will bring clarity, compassion, and empowerment to your healing journey. Discover how to work with your nervous system, rather than against it, shifting from states of survival to deeper states of connection, presence, and resilience.

Module 2 - The N.U.R.S.E. Resiliency Protocol: A 5-Step Map for Compassionate Awareness and Skillful Attunement.

This module introduces the N.U.R.S.E. Resiliency Protocol, a 5-step map for navigating challenging times with compassionate awareness and skillful attunement. We’ll take a deep dive into Steps 1 and 2: Notice and Name and Understanding. These steps help bring compassionate awareness to the protective and defensive patterns held in the body, nervous system, and mind. With this new awareness comes greater freedom and choice, aligned with a broader vision for your well-being.

Module 3 - Deep Dive into Step 3 of the N.U.R.S.E. Resiliency Protocol: Resource and Regulate.

In this module, we’ll focus on Step 3: Resource and Regulate - essential tools for a healthy nervous system. In today’s world, many of us live in a constant state of stress or overwhelm, leaving our nervous systems stuck in patterns of fight, flight, freeze, or collapse. Somatic resourcing and nervous system regulation tap into the body’s innate wisdom to find anchors of stability, comfort, and grounding, allowing us to feel more present and engaged in life.

Module 4 - Co-Regulation and Embodied Boundaries.

Learn the importance of co-regulation and establishing healthy embodied boundaries to foster deeper connection, safety, and authenticity—both with yourself and others. This module will guide you in moving through life with more trust, safety, and presence, allowing you to live in alignment with your true Self and engage in relationships from a place of compassion and care.

Module 5 - Deep Dive into Step 4 of the N.U.R.S.E. Resiliency Protocol: Somatic Inquiry and Attunement.

Are you ready for radical befriending and reconnecting with your deepest Self? More than simply learning theory and tools, this course is dedicated to transforming and changing your relationship between you and your body. This has been an especially hard season. The world seems to be on fire (literally and metaphorically). It feels as if there is a constant drip (or stream) of cortisol in the air sending our nervous systems into overdrive. It is our human nature and the survival strategy of our reptilian brain to get pulled toward reaction, despair, helplessness, fear, anxiety and rumination during times of distress. This loop of dysregulation can cause us to get stuck in ght, ight, freeze and collapse. Stuck in seeing all of life and one another as a threat. This is for our survival and by design. BUT, with awareness and attunement, we can bring in enough felt safety to our bodies in order to cultivate aligned choice and greater exibility and capacity in our nervous systems for these times. "Rising in Resilience: Freedom from Burnout for Nurses and Helping Professionals" redefines burnout as any event or series of events that's perceived as too much by our nervous system and body. Burnout overwhelms our ability to cope and self-regulate, puts us into states of defense, and it disconnects us from ourselves, from others, from the here-and-now. This course also radically redefines resilience as a relational journey rooted in compassionate awareness, self attunement, and co-regulation. Your participation in this course helps build a shared humanity and compassionate lens for how we are biologically wired for safety, threat and connection. This course is grounded in Polyvagal Theory and Somatic Psychology, and is designed for nurses and other helping professionals who may be feeling the weight and burden of overwhelm from challenging times. By the end of this course you will be equipped to recognize the physiological signs of burnout and nervous system dysregulation and take proactive steps that support your wellbeing. You will also learn bottom up (body and nervous system based) interventions, in line with the latest Polyvagal research, to regulate your unique nervous system. Information on Continuing Education Credit for Health Professionals

12 CEs available at the end of the course for an additonal $60 fee. CE credits for psychologists are provided by the Spiritual Competency Academy (SCA) which is co-sponsoring this program. The Spiritual Competency Academy is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. Spiritual Competency Academy maintains responsibility for this program and its content. The California Board of Behavioral Sciences accepts CE credits for LCSW, LPCC, LEP, and LMFT license renewal for programs offered by approved sponsors of CE by the American Psychological Association. Why I created this course…

“Maybe my stories can free you from yours.” I want to share a bit more of my personal journey with burnout and how it led me to create Rising in Resilience. I share this not to play victim, or get sympathy, but truly because I believe our stories are meant to be shared. As my favorite heart-teacher, Sarah Blondin, writes, “Maybe my stories can free you from yours.” And because I believe that what is cast-away in me is also hidden in you. Since my small eyes could open, I have been a deep feeler. I often believe I feel life at 140%. Being a highly sensitive human and having a sensitive nervous system, life often felt too much, too fast, too overstimulating. As a nurse for over 15 years, including 8 years in critical care and 3 years in acute dialysis, I chronically battled work related burnout and anxiety. However, it reached a tipping point during the pandemic where even stepping foot into the hospital would trigger a fight-flight response in my body. My body would be consumed by a rushing energy. My vision became tunneled. My breath constricted and shallow. Even on a mellow-ish day at the hospital these responses took me hostage. In January 2021, I came home from work and collapsed on the ground, feeling an overwhelming and foreign energy coursing through my body. It was a feeling of collapse, freeze, overwhelm and fear. My mind was thinking thoughts it had never thought before and my body was frozen in overwhelm. After getting through that initial night, I remember the days and weeks following, trying to make sense of it all. My family, out of their love, and the doctors out of their concern, all tried to figure out what this was. There was this urgency to try and analyze it, fix it, diagnose it and medicate it. However, my Somatic Therapist offered a different perspective. And my Somatic Therapist said to me, "I think what you’ve experienced is a protective, survival response from your nervous system that is outside of your window of capacity.” And she said, "We can try an experiment. If you give me some time, I think we can bring in enough resources to get you back into your window of capacity and even grow your window of capacity a bit bigger so you can start handling more of these larger energies that the world just keeps pouring on us wave after wave." And it really made sense to me, I was willing to do this experiment and give this a shot. I also decided to go back to school for somatic therapy to learn more about the science behind what I was going through and tools to help. I realized that my burnout came from experiencing too much stress for too long of time without proper resourcing or tools to come back to a felt sense of safety in my body. Burnout had interrupted the resiliency and flexibility of my nervous system, leaving me “stuck” in a threat response until my body had enough and collapsed. My hope is that the evidence-based tools and strategies I have found over the years to untangle my own knots, will untether you from yours. For it wasn’t the Code Blues that broke me (when you have to do CPR), or the 24-hour call shifts, or even the years of caring for patients at the end of their life…what ultimately broke me was my nervous system. Nursing burnout left me another person, one who longed to feel like myself again, to slow down, to feel compassionate, to feel alive and full of joy. One thing I know for certain is I would not be where I am today had I not been buoyed by the tools, practices and science of Somatic Therapy and Applied Polyvagal Theory to reclaim my nervous system. Through Rising in Resilience, I aim to help others overcome burnout and build resilience by providing the tools to come back to a felt sense of safety in their bodies. The book focuses on addressing the physiological responses to stress and burnout, teaching somatic embodiment practices to resource and regulate the nervous system, and promoting self-awareness and resilience.
